Štědrý den (December 24th) Christmas day

Image
Štědrý den (December 24th) is the most enjoyable day of the Christmas holidays.  It is more significant than the 25th of December is 1st day after Christmas, when most Americans celebrate, The Czech name literally means “Generous Day”, and this is most likely for the wealth of food that has traditionally been served for Christmas lunches, dinners with families and fed farm animals.  Even the poorest families would make sure that everyone’s plates were full on this day. 26th of December is also family day, we call it 2nd day after Christmas where most Czechs are off of work and visiting families, kids collecting gifts and all celebrating together. We love this holiday and spend days in advance preparing with lots of baking and cooking. Starting on the morning of the 24th, we put out plate filled with cookies, traditionally breakfasting Vanocka,  during the day snacking on Obložené Chlebíčky which are little open-faced deli style sandwiches served on thin slices of baguette and co

You reap what you sow

Image
I decide  write this blog today, because i know and i feel like I should be reminding myself of my actions and thinking lately. I have major changes in my life lately and yes i worked very hard for it to be there where I'm today and what i wanted. I'm so so grateful, thankful and very blessed to have this life. It includes my family, very few true friends and my new surroundings. Not everyone is or was ready to grow with me, which is ok. Maybe it wasn't their time or the circumstances. And i still want and will be supporting them💜 I have so many plans and visions to achieve, not only finish my cooking story book, but have my own little Gabs business , charities, animals shelters support and lots more. So stay tuned 😏 Lets talk today about NEGATIVITY which is huge daily struggle, isn't it?  How to remind positive? What is your constant negativity? Your job is not going as you wish, not enough for spending, not trustful friends, or maybe family consiste

My war with thyroid

Image
That’s My story about thyroid....   Lately I have been questioned from many of you about thyroid issues so I decided  share some information. Ever sins my early age , about 8-10y/o, doctors diagnosed me with thyroid exactly said hyperthyroidism. 👇 My parents couldn’t explain to my teachers why I’m secretly eating in classes and have had hidden food under my class desk and constantly brought home notes from teacher complaining about....very hyper in Ph class, sometimes panic attacks from changes, ...concentration in garbage etc...So they took me to doctor. Well guess what... nothing changed in snacking 24/7 hahaha I must say I'm the generation of Chernobyl disaster in April 1986 as well, but I'm very healthy kid and can't verified if I got exposed to this tragedy or not. My country never give to us any vitamin supplements, the only think I can remember we got lots of vitamin B prescribed and fish oil, oh lord nasty at that time, but today I love fish oil, c

Sweet Czech dumpling

Image
It has been very long time I made Czech sweet dumpling with fruit filling. Today I made it with cherry and very different topping, today I roasted on butter walnuts and panko bread crumbs, added powder sugar. Why panko instead regular bread crumbs?  It does adds very huge crunch to it, its just wow that crunch, believe me! Ingredient:   1 egg 500-550 ml of milk 3 tablespoons of sugar 1 kg of coarse flour, which I mix unbleached all-purpose and Vondra flour 42 g yeast (1 cube or 1 bag of dry yeast) Butter for pouring on the top Directions: 1.         F rom 100 ml of milk, a teaspoon of sugar and yeast, make a sourdough and process the semi-solid but soft dough. You can easily replace some of the milk in the recipe with water. 2.        When the dough is raised, roll it out on a floured roll to about 45x45cm, divide it into 6 equally wide strips and then each strip to 6 parts (36 squares). 3.        I will put in everyone a spoonful of fruit cut into cubes, m

Melta- coffee substitute kids can drink

Image
Melta is a very traditional coffee substitute. I used to drinking as a child with my brother mixed with milk or we broke our “rohlík” white bread roll into small pieces and put it into a cup with melta and eat. It’s  composition is a bit strange, but the following raw materials are ground: chicory root, sugar beet, barley and rye. For the human body, the true wonder is the chicory root. It hardly occurs in the diet and is difficult to come across. However, chicory root contains inulin, which is a helper in many difficulties associated with urinary tract inflammation, kidney stones, constipation or anorexia. The chicory is much older and better known than melta. It has been mentioned in Europe in the 17th century. It is produced only from roasted chicory root. Both beverages, or more precisely coffee powder, are available today. If you do not want to drink these drinks on the advice of doctors because of your health condition, at least taste it in the history and life of grandpar

Pantry - Spíž

Image
Pantry –Spíž  : in Czech,  is a room where  beverage, food , sometimes dishes, household cleaning chemicals, linens are stored. The word "pantry" derives from the  Old French  term  paneterie ; that is from  pain , the  French  form the  Latin   panis , "bread". In late middle age a pantry was where  bread  was kept and food preparation associated with. The head of the office responsible for this room was a  pantler . Could you believe they had extra a person called pantler? There were similar rooms for storage of  bacon  and other  meats  ( larder ),  alcoholic beverages and cooking. In the USA, pantries evolved from early  Colonial American  " butteries ", built in a cold north Colonial homes, into a variety of pantries in self-sufficient farmsteads. Butler's pantries, or china pantries, were built between the dining room and kitchen of a middle-class English or American home, especially in the latter part of the 19th into the early 20th centu
